Weber 721001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 18.5-Inch Smoker

Great improvement of a great product!5

As a fan of the earlier Smokey Mountain Cooker I'm surprised and gratified with the changes they made to the smoker.

The previous smoker was an easy 5 stars in my book. I guess I'd have to give this one 6 stars because it's better!

After using my old smoker for some time I began finding ways to improve it. It seems that Weber thought so too and their changes include all of mine plus a few more.

Here are some important improvements:

Wider door for adding charcoal & such. This is NOT a small detail but rather a much appreciated design change. The older model's smaller door made it more difficult to place wood chunks or new charcoal where I wanted them and once upon a time I knocked the water pan down into the coals trying to put a wood chunk toward the back of the smoker.

The door latch is spring loaded and features a lever type handle. The previous door latch is not spring loaded and had a featureless round knob. It was less secure and not always easy to tell if the latch was fully closed. Now it's obvious -- for those of us who need things to be obvious. :)

Built-in thermometer! To think I paid more than Amazon's current price on the smoker and then another $50 on a thermometer. Mine is even in the same place on the lid. Great minds think alike I guess... and Weber added this useful feature while keeping the price under control.

Bottom ash catch pan. I never thought of that one but then again I have a concrete pad set up and it was never a big deal to sweep up a few stray ashes.

Overall the smoker performs as well as the older model but is much easier to use. With the thermometer it will be much easier to maintain temperature and smoke up some great grub right out of the box.

I am by no means an expert but here are a few quick tips for using this smoker.

0. If you are interested in instant gratification get a gas grill or go out for dinner. It takes some work time and patience to use and maintain this smoker.

1. Keep the temperature as stable as you can.

2. Don't lift the lid any more than you have to (for mopping adding charcoal etc.

3. Use briquets at least at first. It's much easier to work with compared to lump charcoal. If you do choose to use lump charcoal don't add any extra wood chips or would chunks! You'll oversmoke the food and that's bad!

4. Start early. Give the charcoal time to start up and the liquid in the water pan to get up to temperature before you put on the food.

5. Line the water pan with aluminum foil. Trust me; it will be much easier to clean later if you do!

6. Make small changes to the vents when you need to adjust the temperature. Give it some time to work.

7. Get a good book on smoking. I think we all know a good place to look for one...

8. The internet is your friend. Check out Weber's site some of the bbq forums and most definitely Virtual Weber Bullet.

Broil King 94974 Crown 70 Liquid-Propane Gas Grill with Rotisserie

Love this grill!5

I spent a couple of months researching grills before I decided on the Broil King 70. I wanted a rotisserie and removable or drop shelves because I have a smaller balcony. This grill fit my needs perfectly!

I only installed one shelf because of size limitations. Assembly was a little awkward but very straight-forward. The only problem was that about 4 of the screws are in tight places requiring a little wrench acrobatics. I've been cooking on it for a few weeks and it lights effortlessly. The rotisserie works like a dream cooking a 6lb turkey breast and boneless lamb leg to perfection. I don't think I could get a whole turkey to fit however.

I'm kicking myself that I wasted 2 months of the summer doing research instead of buying this one right away!More detail ...

Bradley Digital 6-Rack Smoker

Buy the Original Model2

I just received this machine. I owned an original Bradley Smoker that gave up the ghost. When I saw the digital one for sale I thought that it would be more precise and a "set and forget" solution to smoking. I have tried it four times now and have discovered that the temperature variation on the unit is as much as 28 degrees over the set point and as much as 16 below the set point for a temp swing of 44 degrees. It turns out that Bradley has a forum for owners and those interested (look at their web site). Quite a number of new owners have been dismayed and disappointed in the temp swing on this unit. When I called Bradley they just said "that's the way it is with this unit" and told me it is similar to my house oven. I doubt that my home ever varies that much. The cycle time for this variation is 15-20 minutes so the food is never at the set point for very long. I don't recall swings like this with my old one.

If you look carefully at what you get for the hefty premium it is not much. The basic unit has the automatic biscuit feed and when its out of biscuits there is no more smoke so the smoke timer on the new one means nothing. The timer on the cooking side has a time limit according to the Bradley owners so you can't leave it more than ten hours without going out and resetting it. The temperature control is not reliable so what do you get for the extra bucks. Not much to my way of thinking.

By the way look at the photo carefully. This unit is not aluminum. It has a door that is painted an aluminum color and the body is black. I have to say that the fit and finish is very nice on the unit.

My advice is buy the original model and save yourself the extra bucks.More detail ...

Camp Chef SPG-90B Big Gas 3 Sports Grill Black/Red

Camp Sports Grill was a Perfect Choice!5

The Camp Chef SPG-90B has been a perfect choice for a camp stove and the BBQ box makes a good combination on top of this 3-burner stove. It is much sturdier than it looks in photos. It sets up in 2 minutes and really IS portable despite having 3 burners. We wanted to look at one in person but couldn't find a retailer anywhere in the area so we took a chance on buying this on the internet. Delivery was FAST! However the photo on the internet shows a rack underneath and the description clearly says that it comes with a rack underneath. FYI - It doesn't. You have to buy one separately and it's $20-$30 from other sources. We do not regret this purchase though.More detail ...

Weber 781001 26.75-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill

Bigger is Better!5

At least when it comes to grilling! After months of anxious waiting I received my "new" 26 inch Weber grill from Amazon a few weeks ago. I say "new" because this is not Weber's first 26 inch grill. They previously had manufactured a 26 inch model that has long since been discontinued.

After having grilled on a 22 inch One Touch Gold and a Performer for years I was anxious to have more charcoal grilling space. Although I have slobbered over the Ranch Kettle I always felt that it was a little too much. Of course I was also never able to convince my wife that I needed one.

The 26 inch kettle took about 20 minutes to assemble. The instructions were written in the international language of "pictures" and are very straightforward. The 26 inch is in all practical purposes a larger 22 inch grill. The wheels ash catcher handles and charcoal baskets are all standard size. The only difference is the larger kettle. When you compare the kettle of a 26 inch to a 22 (see the images above) it might not appear to be that much of a difference. I believe that it is as the 26 boasts an additional 145 square inches of cooking space. When you are trying to grill multiple things at the same time that difference means not having to fire up a second grill.

The size of the 26 allows for more range in temperature zones for direct grilling. Internally like on the 22 there is 5 inches between the main grate and the charcoal grate. The lid holder nicely holds the lid out of the way. My old Performer did not do that very well. I am thankful this model does. I do wish there was a hook to hang the main grate from. You can invert the grate and use the handles to hang it over the lip of the kettle but I would prefer an actual hook.

I have cooked both direct and indirect on this new beast and I am happy with the results. The one learning curve I am tackling is charcoal usage. Figure about one and a half times more charcoal than you would typically use on the 22. In fact if you can fit everything on the 26 versus firing up two 22 inch kettles you are using less charcoal overall. Nice.

If you do a lot of grilling for a lot of people or you grill a lot of different things for a few people this is a great grill. If you are only an occasional griller I would recommend the 22. However if you understand how precious grill real estate when you craft your evening's dinner the 26 will not let you down. It's a Weber what more can I say? Happy Grilling!More detail ...

Weber 586002 Q 320 Portable Outdoor Gas Grill

Unless your cooking for an army this is the one to get...5

Been waiting for awhile to find a good deal on this but Amazon's got the best price with shipping you are going to find. $0.01 doesn't get much better than that. What surprised the heck out of me was ordering early Thursday morning and finding at my doorstep Friday before noon. FedEx overnight somebody loves me. This was supposed to ship ground.

I've bought a Weber Q several years ago so I already know what the fuss is about. Cast iron grill great cook platform etc. I've never used a cover so over the years I've had to replace burners etc. as they corroded and degraded. Not Weber's fault but Weber customer service is the greatest 24/7 etc. cheerfully helped identify what I needed and sent me the replacement parts.

I've been enviously looking at the 300 and when I saw the specs on the 320 I knew I was looking at my next Weber.

I thought I knew what I was getting but I was pleasantly surprised at what I unboxed. This one is even cleverer than the original.

Stationary Cart is a well thought out design. Stable with safety features I've never seen implemented as well. The Tank storage system that locks the propane tank in place so it can't shift and also provides the cart with a counterweight to help prevent tips is a marvel by itself. The collapsible shelf system is elegant and functional while feeling more substantial than the Q200's fixed shelfs.

The slightly larger cooking area is served by split cast iron grills instead of the single grill piece used by the Q200. This actually makes this grill easier to clean and service while taking nothing away from the cook area. A stainless steel warming rack is a nice place to put up food from the grill surface. Just sits there but is totally substantial and stable.

A second burning tube stainless steel to prevent rusting out provides the additional heat and controls to bring the grill up to the temperatures I need to cook in colder weather. 40degrees last night and the grill still heated up to over 400 degrees in about 5 minutes.

Thermostat is simple and will be easy to replace in the event of breakage or failure. This has an integral BBQ light that has a sensor that automatically turns it off when the lid is lowered. Very cool.

I have never been satisfied with the old style igniter on the previous Q models. The Q320 now has a electronic igniter that works great. Uses a AAA battery. Press a button and poof. Weber's lit. The outer burner ignites the center burner automatically.

Assembly was easy with two of us but this could have been assembled easily by one person. Directions could have been better but pictures worked fine.

Food tastes great. Looking foward to putting through it's paces this summer.

Already bought my grill cover. This time I don't plan on abusing Weber Customer service as much .

Bradley BTIS1 Original Fully Automatic 4-Rack Outdoor Food Smoker

Almost the Perfect Smoker4

I've owned this smoker for 3 years and have been very happy. I've cooked ribs brisket picnic shoulder boston butt and salmon and they all have come out fantastic. Using the Bradley is very simple. I've tried smoking the traditional way but for the occasional weekend smoker keeping the heat low and slow is nearly impossible; the constant monitoring of heat and fuel for 6-12 hours took out all the joy of eating. Bradley is the way to go!

Besides making sure there were enough "pucks" of wood you have to check the water pan to make sure it doesn't go dry. If you're smoking something fatty like a boston butt I would recommend tossing out the oil and ash that drips into the pan after 3 hours or so and add more water. Other than that it's set and forget.

We don't have a much of a selection of wood where I live (mesquite is king) so it's great how easy it is get different woods to try and mix them like the pros do. It's not expensive to run Bradley recommends that you only need to smoke the food for only half the total time it takes to cook your food so if it takes 12 hours to finish you only need 6 hours worth of pucks.

The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because it doesn't get hotter than about 250 degrees. If it had a more powerful heating element it would have greater versatility and you could cook perfect chicken with crispy skin or use it during colder outdoor temperatures.

Side note: Just as important as the smoker is the rub and sauce. The best cookbook for BBQ I've found is Peace Love & Barbecue: Recipes Secrets Tall Tales and Outright Lies from the Legends of Barbecue. It gives you the REAL award winning recipes not the common "based on" recipes from some well-known BBQ pros. In addition there are valuable hints on prepping and cooking that most other books don't give and a great guide that will help you develop your own signature rub.More detail ...

Broil King 934664 Monarch 40 40000-BTU Liquid-Propane Gas Grill with Side Burner

High quality without paying for the Weber name5

I did tons of research online to find the best gas grill. I wanted a good quality grill that will last not rust out and not need constant upkeep and replacement parts. I'm only cooking for my wife and I so I did not need a huge oversized grill. I checked all of the local big box stores. The smaller grills at these stores had a nice price tag ($80-$150) but they were so flimsy and all of the online reviews said they either rusted out or broke after a year or two of use. I was willing to step it up a notch and pay more but in the big box stores all you get for a bigger price tag is a bigger grill that will still rust out and break down after a couple of years. I wanted something that would last. The next option up in the big box stores was to purchase a Weber. Weber has a great reputation for quality but they are so expensive and big. I found that the Broil King brand was the perfect solution to my problem. They build high quality grills (via Onward Manufacturing Co. which has some affiliateion with Weber but I'mnot sure what.) Broil King has several differnt models with a lot of configurations and options. They are one of the few companies that use cast aluminum for the oven (it will not rust and comes with a lifetime warranty). Their burner design is praised in online reviews and comes with a 5 year warranty. They use heavy duty cast iron cooking grids that weigh over seven pounds each. Their heat diffuser (Flav-R-Wave) is made of heavy duty stainless steel (other companies use cheap steel..just a step up from aluminum foil). I finally narrowed my search down to a Monarch or Crown model. Amazon's price ($319) no tax and free shipping sold me on the Monarch 40.

One thing to note is that the stand looks like stainless steel but it isn't. It is steel painted to look like stainless. Also I agree with another poster that the stand could use some extra stffness. The fact that the casters are plastic bother me but they work and they are used on all of the Broil King's grills. So I think the only con on the Monarch line is the cart/stand. It will last but I think the actual grill will outlast the cart. Of course this is the bottom of the Broil King line. In the end I think I finally found what I was looking for. I just wish Broil King was sold in more local stores. If they were the would tear up the competition!

One final thought. The "Mr. Bar-B-Q Platinum Prestige Medium Grill Cover" is the perfect fit and best quality cover I have found. It was only $19.99 when I bought it...and free shipping!More detail ...

Weber 731001 Smokey Mountain Cooker 22.5-Inch Smoker

Excellent but a little pricey4

I am cooking ribs on my 22" WSM as I type this. This will be my third time cooking since I received it a few weeks ago and the results I've been getting have been some of the tastiest barbeque I've ever had. The design is excellent the build quality is excellent the instructions and support from Weber - all excellent. But after all this "hype" the reason I only gave it 4 stars out of 5 is because as good as it is I believe Weber has over-priced it somewhat. I would have expected something of this size and quality to be priced closer to $350 or so.

Anyway the good news is the key to successful barbeque is temperature control. I threw away money a few years ago on a cheaper smoker in which it was almost impossible to control and ruined several dollars worth of meat trying. But temperature control is what makes this unit great. The WSM almost feels like cheating. Once you get it set it just seems to stay locked into a very narrow temperature range requiring very little adjustment as it cooks. It's as easy to keep it "locked in" at 200 degrees as it is to keep it at 325. However there are a few little tips and tricks of the trade to cooking on a smoker and barbeque in general that require a little research trial and error and discussion with experienced "pit masters." For this I highly recommend The Virtual Weber Bullet website and The Virtual Weber Bulletin Board. There is a wealth of knowledge there and you can get questions answered by professionals as well as pit master wannabes who are just starting out and learning too.

I would recommend starting with a Weber Smokey Mountain a high-quality easy to use smoker rather than wasting money on a cheaper one only to realize later that it's too frustrating to use and then have to break down and buy the good one later. That would be the MOST expensive way to get into barbeque at home.

Weber 426001 Q 300 Propane Gas Barbecue

Love this grill5

I've had the Q300 for about 10 weeks and grilled on it 3-4 times per week. Grilled steaks roasts chicken (both direct and indirect heat) pork

loins hamburgers and hotdogs and the Q300 handled it all.

Gets hot fast:

From start with both burners on high...3 minutes grill is at 310 degrees....7 minutes 400 degrees.....10 minutes 520 degrees....14 minutes maxes out at 590 degrees

I like to cook chicken and pork over indirect heat so I really like having the two burners with separate controls. The larger burner runs the perimeter of the grill and a second smaller burner goes down the center.

Outside burner only (High)..maintains 400 degrees(Low)..300 degrees

Center burner only (High)..maintains 300 degrees(Low)..200 degrees

Both burners on (High)..maintains 590 degrees (Low)..500 degrees

Best Fathers' Day gift ever!5

The Weber Genesis gas grill was an instant favorite in this house! It replaced a 14-year old Weber grill but it has many upgrades. We also appreciated the delivery right to our garage as this is a large and very heavy item. More detail ...

Weber 758001 22.5-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill Blue

The top of the three-legged Weber line5

After using a 22 1/2 inch Weber for 12-13 years and never paying any attention to taking care of it I decided to get the new One-Touch with the bucket ash catcher--the "Gold" model. I also went with the blue color for an extra ten bucks.

There is nothing wrong with the Silver model but the addition of the enclosed bucket-type ash catcher is enough of an improvement to make the Gold model the top choice. As much as I loved my old Weber I always had ashes scattered around on the patio after using it. That open pan-type ash catcher could be mighty messy especially in the wind. It's not a concern with the One-Touch Gold.

It's easy to love a Weber grill. The design is a classic and it has proven itself for around 50 years. The grill is incredibly versatile. I only rarely use my big smoker since it's pretty simple to slow cook roasts ribs and briskets on the Weber. And it's ideal for direct grilling of steaks burgers sausages and vegetables.

The one accessory you should get is the Weber chimney starter. Take it from me you won't regret it at all. I've owned three or four other chimney starters and ended up going back to charcoal lighter because none of them ever worked well enough to reliably get a fire going. Well the Weber works and it saves the expense of the lighter fluid and the time it takes to burn off the odor and taste.

If you're on a budget the Silver model will work just as well as the Gold. If you're willing to spend extra for more convenience the Gold One Touch is the way to go. The blue one looks nice too. More detail ...

Weber 3780001 Genesis S-320 Propane Gas Grill Stainless Steel

Genesis S-320 ; a gem ... 5

The reason I bought this bbq was 1) it was rated the best bbq between $500 and $1000 by most all rating bureau's 2) it uses high quality 302 s/s 3) has s/s cooking racks which to me are easier to clean 4) its a very pretty bbq and 5) it's a Weber made in the US. The E-320 with colored panels in my opinon isn't as nice looking as the s/s unit.

I bought this bbq from Amazon about 10 days ago. It was shipped for free via Eagle Transportation. I think Amazon realized large items shipped UPS were arriving damaged. At least the few large items I previously ordered and shipped UPS arrived that way. The shipping estimate was 10-14 days with the free option. Four days after I saw that the item was shipped I received a call from Eagle's Los Angeles depot asking me when I wanted it delivered. I couldn't believe that ! I told them the next day. They gave me a time frame 10-1 asking if that was agreeable. At 11 Eagle arrived off loaded my bbq in one huge box and asked where I wanted it. The box was completely intact and undamaged. I've never encountered that kind of service from any carrier. Cudos to Amazon on choosing this shipper.

Now the bbq. Weber's Genesis S-320 LP. I'm a very handy guy with a garage full of tools. I unpacked all the parts and had them spread out on a blanket so I wouldn't scratch them on the cement floor. Everyone's greatest dread is the assembly instructions usually done in a foreign country and poorly translated in to English. But since Weber is made in the USA I found the step by step numbered instructions very easy to follow. All the little screws washers and bolts were nicely packaged and oh my goodness... they were all there. There were no shortages of any parts. One or two extras in a package would have been nice since I usually drop one of something and lose it somewhere under a bench in the garage. Anyway the bbq went together effortlessly. I had my propane tank filled and used the weight hanger inside the stand which showed the tank was full. Another nice touch.

Now for the good part; using it. I did that tonight for the first time on Mother's Day. I thought that was appropriate. Anyway I made cheesburgers - one of my most favorite bbq foods. I read the instructions on how Weber thought hamburgers should be cooked; medium heat with the lid down. They recommend always keeping hte lid down to cook and only opening it to turn the food or check to see if it's done. I also used the side burner just because... it's there. I've never had a bbq with a side burner and found it handy but a space hog. The bbq did what it is intended to do very well. It cooked my burgers in record time with the lid down. We also cooked corn on the cob wrapped in tin foil in the grill at the same time. Everything turned out great.

Now my trivial gripes. The right side table has all the controls. That only leaves a very small amount of space between the control knobs and the bbq as a useable work area. One should be careful placing items in that area because being so close to the bbq it does tend to get a bit warm. I don't know why Weber couldn't put the controls on the front of the bbq leaving two nice sized working platforms. I found that a bit irritating especially when I used the left side burner. I had no place to set down plates platters etc. I had to pull up another small table. I don't know how often I'll actually use the side burner. If I don't use it ofen which I probably won't then it's really not an issue.

Did I say gripes? Well that's all I can think of. Overall I'm very happy with the Weber Genesis S-320. I like it alot. Would I buy it again if I only wanted to spend around $750?? You bet ! I can see why it's rated highly in all the reviews. And you get Webers great guarantee and customer service. Go for it...you won't be disappointed.

Weber 441001 18.5-Inch One Touch Silver Kettle Grill Black

Great grill for direct cooking too small for indirect.4

I love this grill. This is one of my four weber kettle grills I own.

Assembly is a snap. The only tool you'll need is a hammer to tap the wheel lugs on. In 15 minutes you can be lighting your coal.

The beauty of this grill is the kettle design which maximizes heat retention and allows the grill to act like an oven with the top on. I've cooked whole chickens cabbage bread and pizza using this method. The top also has a hook on it so you can hang it from the side of the grill while you add sauce or tend to what you're cooking.

My only complaint about this is its size. Its great for direct cooking steaks chops etc. But to do some more long term smoking of ribs whole chickens its a little small because the coals get too close to the sides of the food and some parts might get scorched. If you do a lot of slow indirect cooked foods go for the 22 1/2 inch weber kettle grill.More detail ...

Cuisinart CGG-200 All-Foods 12000-BTU Tabletop Gas Grill

Easy to use Grill with Superior Cooking Capabilities5

I just got this grill...it's a state of the art tabletop grill. The grill is already put together so it's essentially ready to be used "out of the box". The grill is very light so it's efficiently portable and easy to carry. It can fit on small or large tables and comes with a stainless steel veggie plate that is great for cooking vegetables kabob's etc. It's got a easy to attach catch pan dipper that just slides on under bottom of the grill. The grill starts immediately (push and turn to light the burner) and the heat comes on quick; the temperature gauge on the top is very accurate and allows superior cooking capabilities which is the best part of this grill. i cooked chicken the first night i got the grill and it came out perfectly. For those of you using Weber or other more commercial grills I'd recommend looking at this. I use to have a weber used for tailgates etc - this grill is 10 times better and reasonably priced for it's quality. More detail ...

Weber 4411001 Spirit E-210 Propane Grill Black

DON'T BE FRUGAL. SPEND THE $$ ON THIS ONE.5

I rented a house in Sedona Arizona for a month where they had a gas grill. Friends visited and grilled up some outrageous steaks and salmon. I had a little Weber Smokey Joe at home that I had not used for years. The charcoal system became too dirty and too much trouble. I never purchased a gas grill as I thought that really great tasting food could not be created on a gas grill.

When I returned home from my trip I went to Target Walmart and Home Depot shopping for grills. Home Depot had a full-featured large stainless steel grill on sale. Orginal price $369 - Sale price $199. The floor unit was the only one remaining unit in all the Phoenix stores. I won't mention the brand name. I purchased the grill and arranged for friends to pickup the following day as it was too big to load into my SUV. I knew it was poorly constructed but the price was too tempting.

When I got home that evening I started reading reviews on the grill that I had just purchased. Nearly all of them were negative. I saw the Webers on the floor at Home Depot. The quality was CLEARLY superior. However they were also considerably more expensive. I decided that I wanted a pleasant grilling experience. I could not picture having friends over for dinner and having burner difficulties.

I returned to Home Depot early the next morning. canceled the original purchase and purchased the Weber Spirit E-210. I had Home Depot assemble the grill for me.

Cooking on a gas grill is a either a science or art. If you don't know how to do it the results will be poor. I watched a gas grilling video on [...] by an executive chef from Morton's Steak House. [...]

This video got me going in the right direction. The key points are high heat preheat and closed cover cooking. You can copy and paste the link to the video into your browser.

This grill heats up to 600 degrees quickly. Everything about it is quality quality. There is a wonderful disposable drip pan system with foil drip pans. The grill plates are heavy steel meaning you will get even heating over all of your meats. Some other reviews mention this unit as having too small a cooking area. Obviously they are cooking for soccer teams. In my opinion this grill is big enough for any family. There is no side burner or rotisserie although an attachment can be purchased. I have a Showtime rotisserie so that wasn't a big deal for me.

I love this grill. It is truly one of the quality items that I own.

Ducane 31731101 Affinity 3100 Propane Grill Black

Quality and Great Customer Service5

This is the nicest grill I have ever owned and I can't believe it really is only about $100 more than the last grill I had which was a total piece of junk. It is really nice quality made. It heats evenly and quickly and is really much larger cooking area than I thought. Its perfect.

I put the entire thing together on my own and I'm a pretty petite woman. It was nowhere near as complicated to assemble as I thought. However I could not locate the knobs for the grill (dials) or the handle for the door. I re-checked every box maybe it was there and the kids conveniently "relocated" it or it was missing in the first place (which I believe). I called Ducane a few questions later they shipped out what was supposed to be 3 knobs and 1 handle only got 1 knob. Tried again only one knob. 3rd time is the charm and the woman I talked to the last two times said she would have the error corrected to reflect the proper part. Really their service was amazing and I'm thrilled with the grill. I splurged on a nice Ducane cover I'm glad I did but this baby will get a parking space in the garage come winter I'm in love with it!More detail ...

Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned Sportsman's Charcoal Grill

Awesome and then some! Plus an update...5

I ordered this heavy (33 pounds) little jewel from Amazon a week ago got it much earlier than expected and tried it out the day I got it. I now have 4 grills: An "oil barrel" type that is perfect for when the family tribe shows up 2 Weber kettle types in different sizes for weekend entertaining and now the Lodge.

I've had several cast aluminum discount store hibachi's over the years and after the wooden handles fall off the legs become impossible to tighten and then the "adjustable" supports for the grill crack. I don't see that happening with this hibachi.

Let the grill pre-heat spray it with PAM and then enjoy the meal. The heat is even cooking times may be a bit faster than you think but the dish will be excellent.

HOWEVER! If one is cooking on a wooden deck as I do invest in some bricks or concrete pavers to go under the feet. Like all cast iron this sucker retains heat and you don't want to burn your house down while entertaining guests.

Look for the book "The Honerable Hibachi" by Kathryn Popper. An excellent guide/recipe book.

I wonder if this would be safe to use in a large fireplace in winter months. Any ideas?

I'm thinking about getting another Lodge and then finding a home for the smaller Weber.

Get one and then enjoy your hibachi.

Update Feb 26 2006:

I've now had the Lodge Hibachi for 4 months and typically use it several times a week. Clean-up is even easier than it was when new. Remember to put a little olive oil or PAM on the grids first and the seasoning improves. In cold rainy weather the hibachi fits and cooks nicely in my fireplace (thanks Ukiechris!) but I crack a window when I do that.

Although quite heavy it's a great picnic grill and will easily cook chicken steaks or burgers for 4 people. My Webers must think I don't love them anymore. I do but the Lodge is perfect for 1-4 people and chicken cooked on the hibachi has a flavor my kettle or barrel grills just can't match.

Besides cooking for that tribal gathering I'll let you know if I find something the Lodge can't do.

Weber 566002 Q 220 Gas Grill

Good grill but widespread regulator issues2

This is a great grill when it works. Unfortunately getting to get it to work can be a challenge as Weber has a longstanding problem that the safety valve in their regulators is very very finicky particularly if you try to use it with the separately sold Weber adapter hose and a larger 20lb propane tank. The problem is widespread and well documented in reviews across the web (see the low-star reviews on the "Weber 41455" on Amazon for instance).

How finicky? If you're lucky you'll be able to get the grill to light up as long as you are willing to spend 5-10 minutes turning it on every single time - a long sequence of very very slowly opening the valve on the propane tank and then letting it all sit for a while for pressures to equalize before you even try to turn on the grill and then a 5-15 minute "reset sequence" if you do something too fast and it doesn't work the first time... if you're unlucky or have one of their defective regulators even that won't work.

What if you call customer service to get help? They're friendly enough and will quickly diagnose the problem (since it is so common) and offer to ship you a free replacement regulator but the problem is so widespread that they can't build the replacements fast enough to keep them in stock so you may well be waiting at least a week or two as they ship them to all the customers in front of you in line before you finally get your replacement and can start grilling...

Past those two issues once you get this grill to work it is a great grill nice and hot great ceramic cast-iron cooking surface built-in thermometer very helpful nice looking and a streamlined footprint if you have a smaller patio and all the other good things that people say. Buyers just need to beware this very well might not work out of the box so you might be waiting a few weeks to do a repair particularly if you plan to use it with the Weber adapter hose and a larger standard 20lb propane tank.More detail ...
